The Organic Chemistry of Sugars

Due to the complexity and complications involved in carbohydrate chemistry, sugars/carbohydrates are viewed as both intimidating and as outside of the mainstream field of organic chemistry. As such, the field is somewhat neglected in both the available literature and in academic coursework. This book demonstrates how, if suitably and strategically protected, sugars will behave like any other organic molecule. Divided into four sections, the book covers nomenclature of carbohydrates, conversion of molecules to lose features of carbohydrates, uses of sugars in mainstream organic chemistry, and approaches toward the total synthesis of sugars and the evolution of combinatorial carbohydrate chemistry.
